Can Dogs Have Bananas?

We all know that pets can eat some “human foods” but not others.  Just like us, their bodies are inclined towards some foods, and some foods they just cannot digest that well.  So what about bananas?  Can our canine pals enjoy this tasty and nutritious treat that many of us love?  Can dogs have bananas?  Well, as a matter of fact, dogs can have bananas, and most love them.  Bananas are considered to be one of the most nutritious and vitamin rich fruits in nature, for humans and animals both!  Vets will actually recommend feeding a dog bananas if they get colitis (an inflammation of the colon) as the enzymes present in the fruit can soothe the irritation in intestines and stop spasms of the colon. It is like a treat with a challenge, and has many nutrients and vitamins that are great for your dog’s health!

Can Dogs Have Bananas?Bananas are absolutely loaded with amino acids, electrolytes, minerals, vitamins B6 and C, potassium, fiber, and manganese, all of which are great nutrients to give your dog.  Bananas are high and sugar and low in fats and calories, and are often sliced up and given as treats to working dogs.  Speaking of which, it is really easy to use bananas as treats or training tools because they can be easily cut into many different shapes and sizes.  Dogs can get sick of eating the same food day after day, so you can even slice up bananas and throw them in their food to spice it up a little!  If you are going for an adventure with your dog, you can bring along a banana as a snack for them, it will help immensely to boost their energy levels.  Fruit, in general, is very good for dogs, and bananas are certainly no exception.  Can dogs have Bananas?  No doubt!  If you want to watch something really funny, give them a whole banana and let them try to unpeel it!

Do not excessively feed your dog bananas, or try a banana only diet, however, because this can actually be harmful to a dog.  Bananas contain very high levels of potassium, which dogs do not tolerate very well in excess.  The regular levels present in a banana are fine, but you don’t want to go feeding them bunches every day.  If you notice your dog become constipated, that is a sure sign they are eating too much potassium (just like in humans).  So can dogs have bananas?  Yeah, certainly, just feed them in moderation, just like anything else!
