I thought it would be nice to introduce you to my degus! Here I am spouting off all this information – I’m no expert but I am always learning.
He’s my alpha male and my first degu. He loves being petted and playing and running in his ball but he’s not huge on being handled and picked up. I’ve gotten more scratches on my hand from this degu but with time and patience, he has grown leaps and bounds and from being a barely social degu to one of the first to climb to the top of the cage when he sees me, his mum, come into a room.
Sugar is the dominant female degu. She loves being handled and if I don’t immediately pick her up when I open up her tank she just crawls right up my arm anyways. She loves to tease her mate Rascal and she is from a wonderful local pet store that breeds degus in Massachusetts, Mayo’s Pets & More in Northborough, Massachusetts. They handle their degus from birth and make sure they go to wonderful homes.
Sneakers and TBD are no longer with me. We had planned on integrating them with Rascal and Sugar but it became a dangerous situation between Sugar and TBD. We found them a wonderful home with some other local degu lovers.
Sneakers ♂ (has a new home)
My poor little Sneakers has the worst luck of any of my degus. When I got him it was clear he was one of the smaller males of the litter and his brothers beat him up a bit as he had little bald patches on his tale. We also thought he was a she when we first got him and didn’t discover his maleness until one day we saw the two little girls no longer acting like sisters. When we thought he was still a girl we tried introducing both the little ones to Rascal and Sugar and a battle broke out and he lots the tip of his tale in a tragic plexiglass pinching situation. It was terrible but he’s healing well.
Though he is still a bunk mate with his sister TBD we’ll be sure to get him neutered or placed in a good home with a non-related female. After the battle with the two pairs we’ll surely never let them all bunk together, unfortunately.
TBD ♀ (has a new home)
Yes, I know…I called her that when my friend asked what the new degus names were the day I got them. I hadn’t picked out for her yet and TBD (to be determined) just kind of stuck. Sometimes I pretend it’s ‘the best degu’ but most people call my bluff on that! She’s very shy and cuddly. She loves to crawl in my sweatshirt and curl up to take a snooze in the crook of my arm while I watch tv.
